During the Gulf War, Graham served as a Judge Advocate, briefing departing pilots on the law of war. Eventually, he transferred from the Air National Guard to the Air Force Reserve.
Graham’s family is military. His father, F.J. Graham, died of heart failure in 1968 at age 52. His sister, Darline, was adopted from the Air Force after her father enlisted in the Air Force. Before becoming a member of the House of Representatives, Graham served in the Air Force. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1982, and remained on active duty until 1988. While in the House of Representatives, Graham sought the Republican presidential nomination. However, he dropped out before the Republican primary in 2016.
