The History of Kettleman City
Kettleman City is a small rural community that was once a thriving mining town. After years of abandonment and decay, the town has recently been revitalized through the efforts of its residents. Kettleman City is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, just outside of California’s gold country. The town was founded in 1851 by John Bidwell and James Marshall, two prospectors who discovered gold near the current town site.
Kettleman City was initially a small mining camp with a population of around 150 people. The town quickly grew as more miners arrived to search for gold. By 1857, KettlemanCity had a population of 2,000 people and boasted six churches, four hotels, five saloons, and a newspaper called the “Free Lance”. However, by 1871, the mining industry had declined and the town began to decline. By 1896, the population had decreased to 200 people and by 1902 only 50 people remained in the town.
The town experienced a renewed interest in 2006 when Preservation California listed it on its list of endangered communities. Since then, many residents have worked to restore and revitalize the abandoned buildings in the town. Today, KettlemanCity has a population of about 350

The Kettleman City Recreation Department offers a wide variety of programs and activities for all ages. Special events are scheduled throughout the year to provide residents with an opportunity to socialize and have fun while improving their fitness or learning new skills. The department also partners with other organizations to offer additional programming such as music concerts in local parks, bicycle rides through local neighborhoods, summer night camps for youth and more.

Kettleman City’s primary school system consists of two schools – Kettleman City Primary and Kettleman City Elementary. Both schools are situated on the same campus, and offer an excellent education for students of all ages. Each year, Kettleman City Primary graduates around 100 students, who go on to attend some of the best colleges and universities in the United States.
Kettleman City Elementary also offers an excellent education, with around 90 students graduating each year. Many of these students go on to attend top colleges and universities across America.
The city’s secondary school system consists of two schools – Kettleman City Secondary and Kettleman City High School.
